THE LEX FRENCH QUARTET COLOUR GRID

‘Colour Grid’ is the new tune from jazz trumpeter Lex French’s fantastic quartet. The track is heavily inspired by both Paul Klee’s painting ‘New Harmony’, as well as Miles Davis’ iconic second quintet. French comments on the latter: “Miles Davis’s quintet was a band that prioritized communication and improvisation, embraced lush and open harmonic soundscapes, and above all, placed the spirit of spontaneity at the center of everything.” That retro Davis-inspired sound is clear throughout, with the sense of musical equality shining through. French himself is on immense form with his melodically virtuosic trumpet taking centre stage, but Jim Doxas and Morgan Moore are allowed the freedom to roam their instruments in a way that moves beyond the potential rigidity of a rhythm section. François Bourassa has the difficult position of taking up the Herbie Hancock spot in the band, but does so with suave precision. Keep an eye out for more from sought-after composer, arranger and trumpet specialist Lex French. -Dan Peeke
